The Importance of Proof Load Testing
Proof load testing is a critical function that ensures the safety of components, and most importantly, people. It helps affirm the stated working capacity of lifting equipment or rigging.
Proof testing certifies lifting and rigging components can withstand the demands of a load without yielding or failing. Barnhart can perform either a tension pull test or compression load test, which is often used on jacks, gantries, etc. Regardless of the type of testing, it should be regularly performed to ensure a component performs correctly and safely throughout its operational cycle.
The load test procedure is mostly performed on a static pull test. In most cases, a load that is 1.1 to 1.5 times the designated load is used. Barnhart has many tools and capabilities to meet the load requirements and accuracy of any proof load test. The test will ensure the components exceed the maximum allowable working load (MAWL) on the material rating.
Proof load testing is required by OSHA and other agencies. ASME standards dictate that lifting equipment that has been fabricated, altered or repaired should be properly load tested and inspected. New equipment can also be proof tested to check that the quality of construction meets operational standards. Some equipment also requires periodic testing every few years.
Regardless of the reason or requirement, Barnhart has the engineers, equipment and facilities to safely perform your proof load test so you have confidence in your machinery and rigging.
Barnhart has multiple options to proof load test a wide variety of equipment:
